Pendleton Partners with Local Schools to Teach Legal Literacy

Sacramento, CA – Pendleton Research Center for Law and Justice has announced an exciting new partnership with local schools to promote legal literacy among students. This initiative, part of the Center’s mission to advance legal education and justice within communities, aims to equip high school students with a foundational understanding of the legal system and their rights as citizens.

The Legal Literacy Program, set to launch this spring, will offer interactive workshops, classroom presentations, and engaging activities led by legal experts, scholars, and law students affiliated with the Pendleton Research Center. These sessions will cover topics such as constitutional rights, the role of laws in society, the legislative process, and the basics of navigating the judicial system.

“Our goal is to empower students by providing them with the tools they need to understand and engage with the legal framework that shapes their lives,” said Dr. Jonathan Carmichael, Pendleton Director. “By fostering an early understanding of the law, we hope to inspire civic engagement and help students become informed, active participants in their communities.”

A Collaborative Approach

The program will initially roll out in three high schools across Sacramento, with plans to expand to other schools in the region. Teachers and school administrators are enthusiastic about the initiative, seeing it as a valuable addition to their civics and social studies curricula.

“This partnership with the Pendleton Research Center is an incredible opportunity for our students,” said Dr. Emily Carter, principal of Westbridge Public High School. “Legal literacy is an essential skill in today’s world, and this program brings the expertise and resources needed to make it accessible and engaging for young learners.”

Hands-On Learning Opportunities

Students participating in the program will engage in activities such as mock trials, debates on current legal issues, and case studies of landmark court decisions. Pendleton also plans to host field trips to local courthouses and invite guest speakers, including judges and practicing attorneys, to share their experiences and insights.

Building a Foundation for the Future

In addition to fostering an understanding of the legal system, the initiative is designed to spark interest in legal careers among students from diverse backgrounds. By exposing young learners to the possibilities within the field of law, the program aligns with the Pendleton Research Center’s commitment to cultivating the next generation of legal professionals.

The Legal Literacy Program underscores Pendleton’s dedication to community engagement and education. “We believe that knowledge is power, and by empowering our youth with legal literacy, we are helping build a stronger, more informed society,” Dr. Carmichael added.
